Greenhouse Irrigation in Nigeria

One of the most important components of a greenhouse is the irrigation system. Without irrigation, you cannot use a greenhouse. Greenhouse irrigation is the artificial application of water to the plants or crops grown in a greenhouse.

The most popular greenhouse irrigation systems are the drip irrigation system and the sprinkler irrigation system. In Nigeria, almost all greenhouses used for the growing of vegetables have drip irrigation systems.

Types of Greenhouse Irrigation Systems in Nigeria

The following are the types of greenhouse irrigation systems in Nigeria:

Drip Irrigation System

Drip Irrigation is the application of water to the root zone of plants with the use of pipes or hoses with emitters. The emitters emit water in a trickle form.

With drip irrigation, you can be sure that your crops will efficiently utilize water. Most of the water you pass to the base of your crops will be used well. No run offs like other forms of irrigation.

The drip irrigation system is the commonest type of irrigation system used for greenhouse farming in Nigeria.

Sprinkler Irrigation

Sprinkler systems distribute water more broadly, mimicking rainfall. This method is effective for larger greenhouses but may lead to water waste if not carefully monitored.

The types of sprinklers used in greenhouses include overhead sprinklers, spray tubes, rain hoses and Sumisansui hoses.

Manual Irrigation

Although less efficient, some small-scale farmers may still use watering cans or hoses to manually water their greenhouse crops. This method is labor-intensive and can lead to inconsistent results but is still common among farmers with limited access to technology.

The Growing Need for Greenhouse Irrigation

Greenhouse farming allows for the cultivation of crops in a controlled environment, protecting them from external weather conditions such as excessive rain, pests, and drought. However, the success of greenhouse farming hinges on effective irrigation systems, as water management is critical to ensuring healthy crop growth.

In many parts of Nigeria, especially during the dry season, water can be scarce, making conventional irrigation methods inefficient. Greenhouse irrigation addresses this issue by delivering water precisely to the plants’ roots, reducing water wastage and promoting healthier crops.

Farmer Adeola’s Story: A Success with Drip Irrigation

Adeola began her farming journey with open-field cultivation of vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. However, like many other farmers, she faced challenges such as pests, inconsistent rainfall, and water shortages. The inconsistency in weather patterns led to poor yields and significant financial losses.

In 2021, Adeola took a bold step and invested in a small greenhouse, but the results were not immediate. The greenhouse allowed her to control the climate for her plants, but she still struggled with water management, especially during the dry season.

She then bought a drip irrigation kit from us. Drip irrigation is a water-efficient method that delivers water directly to the plant’s root zone through a network of tubes and emitters. This reduces water waste and ensures that plants receive the exact amount of water needed.

With a small investment in a drip irrigation system, Adeola transformed her greenhouse farming. The system allowed her to:

Reduce water usage by up to 50%, as water is delivered only where it is needed.

Maintain optimal soil moisture, which improved plant health and increased yields.

Minimize labor as the irrigation system could be automated, freeing up her time for other farming activities.

In just two growing seasons, Adeola saw her vegetable yields increase by 40%, and her profits doubled. The quality of her tomatoes improved significantly, which allowed her to charge higher prices at the local market. Additionally, the ability to grow crops year-round made her farm more sustainable.

What is a Greenhouse?

A greenhouse is an enclosed structure or environment where crops are grown. A greenhouse protects crops from pests, diseases and adverse climatic conditions. For example, a greenhouse can be used to cultivate tropical crops like pepper and tomato in a cold country like Canada and Netherland.

A greenhouse can also be used to cultivate temperate crops like blueberry in a tropical country like Nigeria. All the greenhouse needs is for the owner to install cold producing atmosphere control mechanism in the greenhouse.

A greenhouse can also have temperature and humidity control. Some crops do not like too much humidity, in areas with high humidity; a greenhouse can be used to cultivate crops that do not grow well in highly humid environments.
